Ferrari's flat-12 powered 312B series of Formula 1 racers was designed to move the Scuderia back into championship contention after a lengthy fallow period. While not quite proving the measure of the era's dominant Lotus and Tyrrell machinery, the 312Bs nonetheless were fast and competitive, and paved the way for future Ferrari success with subsequent cars. American racing icon Mario Andretti was a key part of the 312B era at Ferrari, lending his prodigious talent to Maranello's efforts at revitalization. One of his strongest finishes came at the 1971 German Grand Prix, held at the newly resurfaced and safety-enhanced Nurburgring Nordschliefe. Starting from eleventh on the grid, Andretti's steady hand guided his 312B2 to a credible 4th-place overall finish, helping cement Ferrari's re-emergence as a contender.
